Everyday Urban Korea

Research Project Annotation

The capital Seoul is facing after a phase of state-led industrialization, diverse democratization movements and being hit by the Asian financial crisis of 1997, a new phase of restructuring and modernization, in which stakeholders draw heavily on cultural and creative policies to turn Seoul into a global city, building up new cutting-edge, knowledge and creative industries. However, existing problems, often the result of large-scale economic and social restructuring processes, as e.g. lay-offs, decreasing birth rates and shrinking population, increasing job and societal pressures, are continuing to exist. As such the future of the city is sometimes unclear, and it is questionable how the citizen of Seoul, especially young Seoulites deal with these new urban realities, how are they navigating the changing spaces of this advancing city and what kind of lifestyles, motives and spirit drives them to find their place in the city.
