Ethnic City and Japan

Research Project Annotation

This research will discuss the dynamic aspects of an ethnic town or an urban ethnic business enclave, particularly its developmental stages and changing function, and the nature of various processes occurring there, focusing on the example of Tokyo, Japan. Next to diverse China and Korean towns, is Nishi Kasai, an Indian enclave, which has recently earned itself the nickname “Little India.” This place is the heart of the Indian culture in Japan.

As a first step, the research would like to make clear why the Indian culture has taken root here and not in other parts of Japan, asking what enables Indian people to live and work in this part of the city. How does Little India effect the city and what correlation exists between Indian people and Japanese residents?
